Congratulations to Alpha Sigma members for their achievements!
The 4th grade at NJSP elementary received a Maude Brown and Henry F. Schricker Endowment grant from the Starke County Community Foundation. The fourth grade will celebrate the Bicentennial of Indiana on December 9, 2016. The day will be filled with activities to trace the historical events and people that led to the development of Indiana. Susan Ruth Brown, storyteller and instrumentalist, will present Musical Adventures in Indiana History. Ms. Brown encourages audience participation which will enhance our study of Indiana and make this a memorable day. The grant will be used to cover the costs of the day. Donna Rowe (2015) is one of the 4th grade teachers who wrote the grant proposal.

Featured quilter at The Plymouth Friendship Quilt Guild for January is Kay Horn, Rochester with her CARDINALS RULE quilt. This quilt started with the center panel and then the borders are two different fabric color ways with cardinals perched in trees that were fussy cut to give various perches for the direction the cardinals would face.
The outside borders were also fussy cut to give a continuous row of cardinals all along the outside edge for the quilt and the outer border has mitered corners. Kay said she thought this was her favorite quilt so far and she has made many, many quilts. Many go to family and friends, but Kay thinks she will keep this one. Lois Ramer from Misty Meadows quilted this on her long arm quilting machine. It is said that if you see a cardinal in your yard it is a loved one looking down from Heaven. I always think of that when I see cardinals on my feeders and am comforted by that thought. Kay lives in Rochester with her husband Arnold and is a retired teacher after 41 years from the Rochester Community School Corporation The Horns have two daughters who are also teachers. Dr. Kristy Horn Sheeler is a communications studies professor and associate dean for academic studies in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Beth Horn Cohagan is a teacher with the Argos Schools teaching English and Speech. The Plymouth Friendship Quilt Guild meets the second Monday of each month at 6:00 at The Life Enrichment Center on Harrison Street. We welcome new members or anyone who is interested in quilting or learning to quilt. With permission from The Pilot News, Plymouth, Indiana. |
Kay's Cardinals rule quilt that was a featured quilt at the Life Enrichment Center last January won a Grand champion ribbon in the Open Class at the Fulton County 4-H Fair. She was pleased that someone else thought it deserved merit. She thinks it was her best workmanship so far. Kudos to her!
