Dr. Annie Webb Blanton of the University of Texas and eleven other women educators of various professional education levels throughout Texas were initiated into The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International on June 3, 1929, which was formed on May 11, 1929 by Dr. Blanton. From this beginning, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International has state and local chapters throughout the United States and in many foreign countries. Alpha Epsilon State (Indiana) was founded in January, 1938.
The founder's belief that a "professional organization to unite women teachers of every level to promote better professional preparation, to recognize achievements of women working in the teaching profession, and to provide scholarships for those in need of assistance while pursuing professional preparation and/or development" is at the core of the establishment and efforts of the Alpha Sigma Chapter. Sponsored by the Alpha Nu Chapter, the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Alpha Epsilon State Indiana came into existence on March 13, 1954, in Plymouth, Indiana, with the initiation of fifteen women educators from Fulton and Starke Counties. On April 3, 2004, the Chapter celebrated its 50th birthday at Chesapeake Run, North Judson. There were twenty-nine members present.
